Saint Hildegard von Bingen
was a 12th century abbess of Rupertsberg. Her conlang, Lingua Ignota
is one of the earliest known existing conlangs
. She is thus also one of the very first known conlangers
. She was canonized by the Catholic church on 10 May 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI.
Her feast day, 17 September, is recognised among some conlangers as being a conlanging holiday. Following a proposal by the Conlanging Librarian in 2010, it is not uncommon in the community to be wished a happy St. Hildegard's day.
