After I set the MediaWiki:Common.css default border style for tables to "none" in order to avoid Firefox's obituary notice-style default table style this and other templates got adversely affected. style="bordertable" will resurrect a table style with thin gray borders. Please look out for templates and tables that want a border and apply style="bordertable"! Specifying a border style/color with a style attribute doesn't work for some reason...
