Talk:Parseltongue

I must say that this is not the way Parseltongue is characterized in the Harry Potter books. As far as I understood it, Parseltongue is a language consisting entirely of the kind of hisses snakes utter naturally, and not phonetically human-like.

Yes, that is pretty much exactly how it is depicted in the movies. So I don't think 'no known form' is entirely right. You Either Speak It or You Don't

About the being born or not being born with Parseltongue- in the seventh book of Harry Potter, Ron and Hermione were able to open the Chamber of Secrets (which we now can only be opened if you ask it to open, thus separating true parselmouths from ordinary witches and wizards). Naturally Harry could do it but in the final scenes, Ron was able to open it by copying Harry's sleep-talking. If you spoke French in your sleep and someone else randomly learned to copy what you were saying- are they learning it, even though they don't know what it means? Whatever the answer, the wording needs to be reconsidered but not as a matter of urgency :D
