A fanlang is a conlang developed by a fan for a pre-existing media franchise. Fanlangs are to conlangs what fan fiction is to literature. Often, the franchise has worldbuilding elements that suggest the presence of one or more unique languages, such as a writing system or a simple naming language used for personal and place names. Fanlangs may expand on these elements, turning the writing system from a cipher for the Latin alphabet to a full-fledged unique script, or expand the naming language's lexicon to include grammar and syntax.

If there are no linguistic worldbuilding elements to build from, a fanlang may simply be made up whole cloth, perhaps reflecting the culture or history of the peoples or characters in the original work.
