Cyberpunk is a dystopian subgenre of science fiction popular in the 1980s. Typical of cyberpunk are the following elements:

  • The time stage is in the near future, usually the 21st century.
  • The world economy is highly globalized and barely controlled by governments.
  • Megacorporations rule business and gangs rule the street.
  • Computers and communication networks are highly developed. Computer hacking is often a common plot element.
  • Implanted hardware is common.
  • Space travel is operated commercially, but usually limited to the solar system, often the Earth-Moon system.

The most important cyberpunk writers are William Gibson, Bruce Sterling, Lewis Shiner and John Shirley. The film The Blade Runner is the best-known cyberpunk feature film.
